The soft-bodied robots may eventually replace those made from metal.
The Harvard team, led by chemist George M. Whitesides , borrowed from squids, starfish and other animals without hard skeletons to craft a small, four-legged rubber robot.
It's expected that such soft robots can help get through cracks after an earthquake or navigate rough terrain on a battlefield.

فقد استخدم العلماء جزئيات "النانو" لمركب النحاس لتطوير قطب بطارية عالي الطاقة يمكن استخدامها في بناء بطاريات كبيرة تكفي لتخزين الطاقة على نطاق واسع.
ففي الاختبارات المعملية، وجد الباحثون أنه عند استخدام مركب النحاس المرتكز على جزئيات نانوية بلورية متناهية الصغر داخل قطب البطارية، فإن البطارية تصمد لحوالي 40 ألف دورة شحن وتفريغ مع الاحتفاظ بحوالي 80 في المائة من سعة الشحن الأصلية، وذلك على النقيض تماماً بالنسبة للبطاريات الحالية المستخدمة في مجال الإلكترونيات الاستهلاكية من نوع "ليثيوم- آيون" التي تتحلل بشكل ملحوظ بعد مرور بضع مئات من دورات الشحن، حيث يتراوح عمرها بين 400 إلى 600 دورة شحن وتفريغ للشحنة أي ما بين سنتين إلى ثلاث سنوات وبحسب طريقة الاستخدام والعوامل البيئية المحيطة.
وذكر "كولين فيسيليس"، المؤلف الرئيسي لورقة البحث والمشارك في العمل، أنه يمكن استخدام القطب لمدة 30 عاماً على الشبكة الكهربائية بحالة جيدة وبمعدل عدة دورات يومياً.
أجرى مجموعة من العلماء بجامعة هارفارد الأمريكية جراحة ناجحة تعطي أملاً جديداً لمرضى الشلل الرعاش "باركنسون" والمصابون بمرض التوحد.
وفي الدراسة، تم زرع خلايا جذعية أخذت من أجنة الفئران في خلايا المخ التالفة في المنطقة الحرجة منه، والتي تسبب الإصابة بأمراض معقدة مثل الشلل الرعاش والتوحد والصرع وجروح الحبل الشوكي فساعدت في إعادة بناء الخلايا التالفة.
وأوضح الباحث من جامعة هارفارد والمشرف على التجارب جفري ماكلست أنه تم متابعة آلية عمل الضفيرة العصبية بعد عملية الزراعة كاختبار حالة بهدف تحديد ما إذا كانت الخلايا العصبية التي زُرعت يمكنها استقبال وإعادة إرسال الإشارات العصبية من المخ إلى الأطراف، واصفا هذا أنه بمثابة تركيب شبكة كهربائية جديدة في المخ.
وأشارت التقارير إلى أن الخلايا الجذعية بعد زراعتها في المنطقة التالفة في المخ جراء الإصابة بأحد الأمراض العصبية التي تحولت إلى 4 أنواع مختلفة من الخلايا العصبية (خلايا المخ) وتم دمجها مع الخلايا الموجودة.
وأظهرت نتائج الجراحة أنه على الرغم من عدم تحول الخلايا الجذعية إلى خلايا عصبية وتحولها فقط إلى أنواع من الخلايا الحقيقية، إلا أنها تمكنت من إرسال واستقبال إشارات إلى المخ، وفقا لصحيفة "اليوم السابع" المصرية اليوم الإثنين.
وسيبحث العلماء في خطوتهم التالية عن الأجزاء الأخرى من الدماغ والحبل الشوكي التي تصاب بالأمراض العصبية الحركية وتؤدي إلى إصابات في النخاع الشوكي، معربين عن اعتقادهم في إمكانية إعادة بناء الدوائر الدماغية في الثدييات بعد نجاح هذه التجارب.

WEDNESDAY, November 16, 2011 (Health.com) — If you have bought a box of tampons lately, it’s time to check the box.
Kimberly-Clark, the company that makes Kotex tampons, is recalling some lots of Kotex Natural Balance Security Unscented Tampons because of potential contamination with bacteria.
Although no one has gotten sick, the company says it knows that the raw material used to make the tampons, which have the carton codes 15063 (18 count) and 15068 (36 count), was contaminated with the bacteria. The carton code, or SKU number, is on the bottom of the package.
The tampons were shipped to stores between October 29, 2011, and November 2, 2011, and were sold at Walmart stores in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas. They were also sold in some Fry’s stories in Arizona and Smith’s stores in Utah and Arizona.
The Food and Drug Administration has more information on the tampons(although the company, not the government agency, is conducting the recall).
Women with cancer, HIV, or any other health condition that weakens the immune system may be particularly at risk if exposed to the bacteria, the company says.
“Consumers should contact a physician immediately if they have used the impacted Kotex Natural Balance Security Unscented Tampons Regular Absorbency product and experience unusual vaginal discharge, rash, fever, headache, vomiting, or abdominal pains, particularly if they are HIV positive; have AIDS, cancer, or an existing serious illness; or may be pregnant,” the company said in a statement.
The recall doesn’t affect other types of Kotex tampons, or other Kotex Natural Balance Security Unscented Tampons that don’t have those product codes. You can find a list of lot numbers and stores where the tampons were sold on the Kimberly-Clark website. The company says they’ve recovered 97% of the tampons that were sold.
